Saline vs. Silicone: There are advantages to both types of implants. Saline implants are filled after the shell has been inserted, so they can be placed through a smaller incision. In the (unlikely) case of an implant rupture or leak, the body will immediately and safely absorb the saltwater filling. Silicone implants come pre-filled by the manufacturer, so they require a larger incision for placement. They are also made of a cohesive gel-like material that largely retains its shape in the case of an implant leak or rupture (making it difficult to notice that a problem has occurred).
