Despite feeling rested, we sometimes see ourselves with a lifeless look. We have bags under our eyes and we can have excess skin on our eyelids, which makes us look and feel tired. One way to get back that fresh look is through a blepharoplasty. Men and women can request this type of surgery.
In the preoperative consultation, an ideal surgical plan will be defined for the blepharoplasty patient, which may be a fairly simple one eyelid surgery, either the upper or lower eyelid. In some patients, it will be necessary to operate both eyelids during the same surgery or it may even be necessary to combine the blepharoplasty with a brow lift, facial rejuvenation surgery, laser resurfacing or eyelid/face fat transfer. For those patients who also wish to smooth out fine wrinkles, this procedure can be complemented by applying Botox or performing a CO2 laser treatment.
As a plastic surgeon when I perform a blepharoplasty, I never use the same surgical plan since each patient is different and unique. In some cases, we can remove excess skin, in others, reposition or remove the excess fatty deposits; in other cases, a blepharoplasty will not be enough, a canthopexy or canthoplasty should be done in order to better strengthen the lower eyelid, which weakens with time.
Am I a candidate for eyelid surgery (Blepharoplasty)?
The appearance of one’s eyes is what matters most. That’s why at any age we can find young and adult patients with prominent fat bags in their eyelids. In either case, it is operable but of course the person must be healthy. This operation is also ideal for those patients who experience secondary vision problems due to excess skin in their eyelids.
How is an eyelid surgery done (Blepharoplasty)?
This surgery is done in an operating room with a team of professionals such as an anesthesiologist, circulating nurse, surgical assistant and a plastic surgeon, in order to provide safety and comfort to the patient. This procedure can be done with local anesthesia, sedation or general anesthesia. The patient will have an appointment with the anesthesiologist prior to surgery and along with the patient the ideal anesthesia shall be chosen. The scar will be in the natural fold that is forms to open and close the upper eyelids. When the surgery is done on the lower eyelid, the scar will be located inside the eyelid. This procedure is called transconjunctival blepharoplasty, done on the edge of the eyelashes.
How is the recovery after eyelid surgery?
The surgery is an outpatient procedure, so the patient may go home to rest the same day of the operation. You should place cold washcloths on the eyelids after surgery during the first few days. This will help reduce swelling.
Postoperative control is essential. After surgery, it is advisable not to wear contact lenses during the first days. In the first three or four weeks, no exercise should be done and sunglasses can be worn. Sutures will be removed in the three to eight days after the operation.
It is normal to have bruising and swelling in the operated area. This can be counteracted with the detoxification program or serum therapy, thus making recovery faster.
