A Root Canal procedure is used when your tooth is damaged to the pulp OR When the cavity has reached or is very close to the pulp. It is mainly used to prevent or remedy infection or pain.
It is used to prevent the infection and save or TRY to save the tooth. It is a treatment used to repair and save a tooth that is badly decayed or has become infected. Remember a Root Canal is the last option before an extraction.
If you have a lot of decay, and the pulp becomes infected, the infection may spread through the root canal system of the tooth. This may eventually lead to an abscess. If root canal treatment (RCT) is not carried out, the infection will spread and the tooth may need to be taken out.
Local anesthetic is used and it should feel no different than having an ordinary filling done. If we suggest you should get a Root Canal and you decide not to have it, the alternative is to have the tooth removed. Once the pulp is destroyed, it can’t heal and it is not recommended to leave an infected tooth in the mouth.
