What to Expect from a Rhytidectomy
Signs of aging, sun exposure, and stress can all detract from a beautiful and expressive face. A facelift surgically treats wrinkles, sagging and loose skin, fat deposits, and tired-looking features, providing a solution for individuals looking to revitalize their appearance. With results that can last many years, a facelift, clinically known as a rhytidectomy, is a popular procedure amongst individuals in their 40s, 50s, and 60s (some patients are even in their 70s and 80s!).
The Facelift Procedure
The actual facelift procedure varies by patient, as the surgeon takes into account various facial structures and incorporates different techniques to meet the needs and goals of each person. For a traditional facelift, the surgeon usually makes the incisions above the hairline at the temples, and extends them in front of the ear and behind the earlobe to the lower scalp. If the neck is also being worked on, the surgeon makes additional incisions under the chin.
The skin is separated from the underlying tissue and muscle. Excess fat is trimmed and removed, sometimes via liposuction the facial muscles are tightened and the tissue is repositioned. Excess skin is then removed, and the rest of the skin is pulled back and secured into place with sutures. If necessary, a second incision may be made under the chin to improve an aging neck. Small metal clips may be used to close the incisions.
The head will be bandaged to minimize bruising and swelling, and a small tube may be placed under the skin behind the ear to drain blood and fluid. Pain medication is recommended to ease any discomfort. The surgeon removes the stitches after about five days, and results become apparent soon afterward. Patients make a full recovery in about 10 to 14 days.
Benefits of Facelift Surgery
Facelift surgery reverses common signs of aging, including wrinkles, sagging skin, and deep creases. It improves muscle tone and removes any excess fat and skin which may be causing a double chin or jowls. The actual procedure is fairly straightforward and complications are rare. Any scars from the procedure will be hidden in the hairline or natural creases of the face, and will fade with time. The physical improvements of the procedure often help patients feel more confident and attractive.
