If you struggle with stubborn fatty deposits in specific problem areas that just don’t respond to diet and exercise, liposuction may be a solution to achieving the toned body contour you desire.
WHAT IS LIPOSUCTION?
Liposuction is a surgical technique to remove excess fat from the body. This procedure is used to target specific areas of the body where there are small pockets of fat that do not seem to respond to diet or exercise. During liposuction treatments, a small metal tube is inserted into the fat layer just underneath the skin and gentle suction is used to remove the targeted fatty tissue from the body.
BENEFITS OF LIPOSUCTION
Liposuction is a safe and low-impact procedure for removing stubborn fat deposits from almost any area of the body that don’t respond to diet and exercise. Liposuction technology has consistently improved in the past years, and the procedure now requires very little recovery and downtime. Liposuction can give your body that toned and lean look that you work so hard to achieve, but that never can quite be achieved through diet and exercise alone. Liposuction diminishes unsightly bulges and bumps in the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks, midsection, upper arms, groin, and flanks, resulting in a more youthful and lean silhouette and the added confidence it brings.
IS LIPOSUCTION RIGHT FOR ME?
This technique is intended for patients who are at or near a healthy weight, but have isolated areas of stubborn fat that does not seem to disappear despite changes in diet and exercise. This is not considered to be a weight loss surgery. While it does remove some fat, this treatment rarely results in a weight loss of five pounds or more. Instead, it should be viewed as a way to achieve smoother contours along specific areas of the body, such as the thighs, buttocks or abdomen. Ideal candidates are in good overall health, and no more than 30 pounds overweight and their excess fat is concentrated in a small number of body areas.
HOW INVOLVED IS THE LIPOSUCTION PROCEDURE?
Liposuction procedures are often performed with lidocaine, a local anesthetic, though treatments of larger areas of the body may require general anesthesia, as they are more involved procedures. Some treatments take just an hour, while others may take longer. In general, procedures involving a small volume of fat or treatment of a small portion of the body tend to be faster and less involved than those involving larger body areas, such as the abdomen.
First, multiple small incisions, less than a half inch in length, are created in the skin. A small metal tube called a cannula is inserted through this incision into the layer of fat beneath the skin. A saline solution is injected into this tissue. This solution breaks apart the fat deposit for easier removal. The targeted fat cells are suctioned out of the body through this tube. As the cells are removed, the remaining natural tissues are sculpted into smooth contours. In the office, a local anesthetic is added to the saline solution.
WHAT LIPOSUCTION TECHNIQUES ARE THERE?
In addition to the basic technique, as described above, there are many specialized liposuction methods offered. These are designed to reduce trauma to surrounding cells by making the fat layer easier to remove. During one of these procedures, ultrasonic liposuction, a special handheld device uses sound energy to break apart the fat and also create more skin tightening.
HOW LONG IS THE RECOVERY AFTER LIPOSUCTION?
Some patients are able to return to work in as little as two to three days. Other patients take one to two weeks to recover. In general, the removal of larger volumes of fat, or the treatment of larger body areas, requires a lengthier healing process. Common side effects include bruising, swelling, tenderness and redness. A compression garment is worn over the treated area to promote healing.
