Mastopexy or breast lift surgery is usually done to correct drooping breasts that may occur after giving birth. Mammograms (breast x-rays) and routine breast exams are required before surgery.
Incisions are made along the natural breast lines and around the dark pink skin surrounding the nipple (areola). A keyhole incision is also made on the areola to define the new location of the nipple. The skin is then removed from the lower section of the breast and the areola; nipple and surrounding tissue are moved to a higher position. After the surgery, a gauze covering should be placed around the breasts and chest. Sometimes, a surgical bra may be worn.
Estimated surgery time: 2 to 3 hours.
Estimated recovery time: 8 to 10 days.
