Enhancement of the chin or mentoplasty is a selective procedure that may be an aesthetic or reconstructive procedure.
It is aesthetic when the patient wishes to have a harmonious face and reconstructive when there is a trauma.
This surgery can be done with other surgical procedures such as a rhinoplasty (nose surgery).
Any person who is in good health condition and wishes to improve the harmony of his (her) face is a good candidate. In addition, it is important that you have realistic expectations about surgery results.
The aim of a chin implant it is not to produce a complete change in the face but to balance it in order to get a natural appearance. In the appointment, we will talk about any problem you experience with your teeth, mouth or jaw to decide on the best surgical plan for you.
How is mentoplasty surgery done?
Chin implants come in different shapes and qualities e.g. silicone or medpore. In the pre-surgical appointment we will decide on what type and size of implant is best for each patient.During the mentoplasty surgery, you will be under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia in the operating room.
The incision will be done either in the mandibular rim or inside the mouth depending on the circumstances. After the incision is made, the implant is placed in a pocket leaving it on the jaw bone and then the incisions are closed. The surgery lasts about one hour.
How is the recovery after mentoplasty surgery?
This is an outpatient surgery in which the patient may have swelling or bruises and in some occasions tape is applied to cover the patient's chin for a few days; regarding food, the patient should eat soft food for a week.
